Langley Named Preseason Player of the Year

Aggies are picked to finish second in the Southern Division

Kameron Langley has 632 career assists.
EAST GREENSBORO – Before his career is over, senior Kameron Langley could go down as one of the best assist men in NCAA Division I history. On Thursday, the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) recognized him as its 2020-21 preseason player of the year.

The conference also released its 2020-21 preseason team and expected order of finish.

If Langley, who led the nation in assists per game and total assists last season, wins the postseason player of the year award, he will become the first Aggie men's player to win the award since Claude Williams did it in 1988.

"It's a huge honor, and I'm just blessed to be in the position I'm in now where people can recognize my talent," said Langley, who became the Aggies and the MEAC's all-time assists leader last season. "A lot of people didn't think I would be in this position. It's just a testament to the hard work I put in and the commitment I have to this game."

In addition to being named preseason player of the year, Langley also earned first-team honors eight months after earning first-team postseason all-conference honors for the 2019-20 season. Langley had 632 career assists. He needs 187 assists to move into the top-25 all-time in Division I men's basketball history. He is currently 177th all-time.

Senior guard Tyler Maye earned third-team preseason honors.

As a team, the Aggies were picked to finish second in the Southern Division by the head coaches and sports information directors across the league. The Aggies received nine first-place votes and 94 total points, one behind projected first-place finisher N.C. Central who received 11 first-place votes and 95 total points.

"Second will never be acceptable in our culture," said N.C. A&T head coach Will Jones. "We appreciate the respect the league coaches and SIDs have given us. We've won a ton of games the last four years, but our focus has shifted to being a top-25 mid-major program in the nation."

The Aggies finished 17-15 overall and 12-4 in the MEAC to finish second. Jones took over as acting head coach in December of last season and 14-5 before being named the permanent head coach in June.

Jones had the Aggies playing for the regular-season championship on the final day of last season, but lost at N.C. Central 86-80. N.C. A&T did win their first-round game of the MEAC Championship Basketball Tournament at the Norfolk Scope Arena, 86-77 over Howard before the COVID-19 pandemic cut the college basketball season short.

In the age of COVID, the Aggies are still trying to finalize their 2020-21 season. The Aggies are expected to play in a multiple-team event at the University Illinois from Nov. 25-27. Their first conference game is slated for Jan. 4 at NCCU.
