GREENSBORO (March 15, 2018) – North Carolina A&T had a tough day in softball a few miles away from N.C. A&T's campus. UNC Greensboro earned a home win with a 10-1 victory over the Aggies at UNCG Softball Stadium on Thursday.
N.C. A&T (3-20) was two-hit by UNCG starter Hannah Stiltner who also struck out five to improve to 2-3 on the season. Junior Zadaisha Waddell dropped to 1-3 on the season after taking the loss in the circle.
UNCG (16-7) led 10-0 going into the fifth inning, but the Aggies avoided the shutout despite not being able to avoid having the game end early with the Spartans leading by more than eight runs after five innings.
The Aggies fifth opened with freshman Marcey Jiles walking and then advancing to second on a wild pitch. Junior Mohagony Headen brought Jiles home with an RBI single down the left field line. Stiltner retired the last two Aggies to close the game.
The Spartans jumped on the Aggies early with a two-run RBI single up the middle by Makenna Matthijs to give UNCG a 2-0 lead. The Spartans posted three more runs in the second thanks in part to a two-run home run from Marisa Sholtes. Jordan Gontram hit a three-run homer in the third inning to give the Spartans a comfortable 8-0 lead.
The Aggies return to action 3 p.m., Tuesday, March 20 when they host Liberty at the Lady Aggies Softball Complex. The Aggies will begin Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference play days later when they host S.C. State for a 1 p.m., doubleheader at the Lady Aggies Softball Complex on Saturday, March 24.
