BOONE (May 8, 2016) – North Carolina A&T lost their final two regular-season games of the season, 8-0 and 9-4 at Appalachian State on Sunday in a softball doubleheader that was rescheduled twice due to inclement weather. Freshman Zadaisha Waddell came up with hits in each game of the doubleheader. Her hit in Game 1 was the only one for the Aggies.
Starting pitcher Mohagony Headen pitched a complete Game 1, but a quick 3-0 Mountaineer lead after one inning left the Aggies trying to fight back throughout the game. Second baseman Cara Parker hit a three-run home run to left field to get scoring rolling for App State. The game would close in six innings as the Mountaineers scored four runs off four hits and an error in the final inning.
The Aggies struggles reaching home continued into Game 2. The bases were left loaded in the second after two singles and a walk, but a strike out by pitcher Vanessa Ciocatto to Zadia Davis wrapped up the top of the inning. N.C. A&T finally scored three runs in the fourth while trailing 7-0. Waddell led off with a home run to left center, followed by a single from catcher Jillian Nobles. Senior Alejandra Barcenas stepped up for her team with two outs, slamming a two-RBI double right center.
Kimberly Brunson made her mark on the Aggies Game 2 performance, hitting a solo home run in the fifth to reduce the Mountaineers lead 7-4. The home runs in back-to-back innings would be Brunson's second on the season, while Waddell leads the Aggies with seven.
However, two runs in the bottom of the fifth wrapped up scoring for the day with Appalachian State on top 9-4. The Mountaineers improve to 11-45 while the Aggies wrap up their regular season at 17-30.
Three Aggies would have multiple hits in Game 2. Barcenas went 2-for-4 with two RBI and Nobles finished 2-for-4 with a run scored. The Aggies begin play in the 2016 MEAC Softball Championship Tournament on Thursday, May 12 against the MEAC north's top seed Delaware State.
