GREENSBORO (April 6, 2016) – North Carolina A&T came up short in their annual showdown against UNC Greensboro at UNCG Softball Stadium on Wednesday as three home runs by the Spartans were driving factors in their 6-0 victory.
Zadaisha Waddell helped N.C. A&T from the circle, as well as at the plate. She would take credit for half of the Aggies four hits on the day and pitched 4.1 innings. N.C. A&T had their scoring opportunities. Waddell reached first on a single in the second, before advancing on Janika May's sacrifice bunt. Zadia Davis came in as a pinch runner and moved to third on a passed ball. However, a ground out by Jillian Nobles would end the top of the inning with two runners left on base.
N.C. A&T had a chance to put points on the board in the sixth. But despite an infield single by catcher Lorrin Turner and Waddell's singled up the middle, but an Aggies ground out and fly out ended the threat.
Unfortunately the Spartans were able to score. Back-to-back home runs in the second by Sidney Girkman and Kendall McKinney gave the Spartans a 2-0 lead until the fifth. The Spartans led off the frame with consecutive doubles to add a run and an RBI single from Lacey Leary took the score to 4-0. The Spartans closed off their scoring for the evening in the sixth with a two-run home run to right center by Tory Wright that bounced off the scoreboard. Pitchers Waddell and Mohagony Headen gave up a combined 11 hits and five walks on 29 at-bats. Waddell gets the loss and stands at 5-11.
The Aggies (13-20) resume Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference play this weekend as they hit the road to face Florida A&M in Tallahassee for a three-game series. Games start with a doubleheader at Lady Rattler Softball Complex Saturday at 1 p.m., and conclude Sunday at noon.
