Savannah State Takes Series From A&T

SAVANNAH, Ga. (April 24, 2016) – North Carolina A&T lost the rubber game of a three-game Mid-Eastern Athhletic Conference softball series to Savannah State, 9-2, Sunday afternoon at Lady Tiger Softball Field. N.C. A&T took advantage of errors by Savannah State to score their two runs.

Shortstop Alejandra Barcenas reached home in the first after an error at second allowed her to steal second and advance to third on a passed ball.  The score came on a sacrifice fly to left field by Raven Gray, giving the Aggies a 1-0 lead.

Janika May went 2-for-3 from the plate, starting with a double in the first.  A single in the fifth and an error by Tiger catcher Tia Bolden put May on second.  After advancing on a wild pitch, May crossed home on Zadaisha Waddell's single to right field, concluding the Aggies scoring for the day.

Savannah State got their offense rolling in the third when an error at third by Kameron Graham put Antonette Smith on base.  A single and follow up double scored Smith, the first of four runs for the Tigers in the inning.

In the fifth, Tamara Jones doubled to center with two runners on base, increasing the Tigers lead to 5-2.  Another double scored one more, and shortly thereafter Mohagony Headen came in to pitch for Waddell with one out and runners on first and second.  With the bases loaded, Molly Lillis' two-run RBI single drove in the final runs of the day.  The 9-2 Savannah State victory puts the Tigers overall record at 21-20 and 10-2 in MEAC competition.

The Aggies (14-28) are 3-9 in the MEAC.  They conclude conference play next weekend in a three-game series against North Carolina Central at Lady Aggies Softball Complex.  The Eagles (5-39, 1-10 MEAC) are the last opponent standing in the Aggies way of reaching the MEAC tournament in May where the top four teams in each division make the tournament in Ormond Beach, Fla.

Prior to the series with N.C. Central, the Aggies travel to Boone, N.C. to face the Appalachian State Mountaineers in a doubleheader on Wednesday.
