GREENSBORO (April 20, 2016) – For the first time since 2006, North Carolina A&T men's tennis team will be playing in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Championships. The men's team, who resumed spring play last season after a nine-year hiatus, will be making the trip up to Norfolk, Va., for the April 21 tournament.
“The players are excited about it. This is my first year there and we have put in a lot of work to make this trip,” said head coach Richard Akande. “We are hoping for a better showing when we get there. We are very prepared. Our team belongs in the championship.”
The men's team posted a 1-2 MEAC record throughout the season, winning on the road in Durham over North Carolina Central, 4-3. Sophomore John Wilson IV leads the Aggies with five singles victories and three doubles wins with partner Dreshaun Jarmon.
“We were supposed to not make it, but we came forth this year. We are getting prepared and are ready to start. They're fired up and ready to go,” Akande said. “I took a team that was not together a year ago. I am so proud of the work I have put on this team and I will continue to develop the program and make Aggie tennis the best in our conference.”
The MEAC tennis championships will be held at Folks-Stevens Tennis Center at Old Dominion University. Tournament play begins with men's matches starting at 12:00 PM on Thursday, April 21. The championship matches are scheduled for Saturday, April 23 at 12:00 PM.
