GREENSBORO (Mar. 26, 2016) -- The North Carolina A&T freshman pitcher Mohagony Headen threw a no-hitter in a complete-game, four-strikeout performance in a 9-0 win over South Carolina State at Lady Aggies Softball Complex Saturday afternoon. Headen's outing helped the Aggies (13-14, 2-1 MEAC) take two out of three from the Bulldogs (4-12, 1-2 MEAC).
The Bulldogs were only able to get two runners on base throughout the contest. Headen's presence on the mound took just 67 pitches as she faced only 17 Bulldogs. Headen pitched briefly in Game 1 of the series and threw a complete-game in Game 2 before taking the field again in the third game for the no-no. She did not give up an earned run in 11.1 innings pitched in the series as she improved to 5-2 this season.
The largest scoring inning for N.C. A&T came in the fourth as errors plagued S.C. State. The Aggies batted around in the inning as the scoring started with Raven Gray's sacrifice fly to center field with the bases loaded as Talisha Jenkins scored. Another Bulldogs error on a Zadaisha Waddell grounder allowed Alejandra Barcenas to score from third. The bats continued swinging for the Aggies with an RBI single from Janika May. Kimberly Brunson rounded out the inning with a two-run RBI triple to left, advancing the Aggies to a 9-0 lead.
The Aggies completed the series in five innings and scored in all but the second. Brunson led the Aggies with a 2-for-3 day with three RBI. May also went 2-for-3 as she scored a run and drove in another.
N.C. A&T got off to an early start in the first. Barcenas was walked by Bulldogs pitcher Kierra Cromer. After Barcenas stole second, Gray singled. A groundout by Waddell scored Barcenas to give the Aggies a 1-0 lead. In the third, catcher Lorrin Turner was walked and advanced to second after a throwing error at third on Gray's fielder's choice. Another Bulldog error scored Turner, the first of three runs in the inning. A disorganized Bulldogs defense gave Gray and Waddell opportunities to steal bases, eventually putting the Aggies on top 4-0.
The Aggies travel to Boiling Springs on Wednesday for a doubleheader against Gardner-Webb starting at 3 p.m. The Aggies then continue at Lady Aggies Softball Complex with a three-game MEAC series against Bethune-Cookman. The series starts with a doubleheader on Saturday, April 2 at 1 p.m. The final game of the matchup is scheduled for Sunday at noon.
