ELON – Elon had two big innings late to end the North Carolina A&T softball team's four-game winning streak with a 14-4 win in six innings at Hunt Softball Park on Wednesday. Freshman Zadaisha Waddell led the Aggies by going 2-for-2 with two RBI and a run scored. Alejandra Barcenas went 1-for-3 with a run scored.
The Aggies dropped to 4-1 on the season. Elon was helped by a good start in which the Phoenix scored five first-inning runs. N.C. A&T made things closer in the third inning. They entered the inning down 5-1 as senior Janika May earned a one-out walk.
Sophomore Raven Gray brought May home by ripping a double to left-center field. Waddell continued to have success off Elon starter Kayla Caruso by hitting her first career home, a towering shot over the left field fence to move the Aggies to within one at 5-4. Senior Kimberly Brunson ended the inning by flying out to center.
N.C. A&T's came into the fifth inning down two runs at 6-4 before Elon's Erica Serafina's double off Waddell to score Carey Million who opened the inning by singling. Kristin Hoover followed with a single to right field to score Serafina to give the Phoenix an 8-4 lead. Hoover moved to third base on a stolen base and a throwing error. After Callie Horn walked she eventually got caught in a rundown which allowed Hoover to score to give Elon a 9-4 lead. Jenna Reilly ended the inning by grounding out.
Elon added five more runs in the sixth inning to put the Aggies away. Caruso picked up the win for Elon after pitching three innings, striking out three and giving up four runs. Freshman Mohagany Headen (1-1) got the start for the Aggies but did not get out of the first inning after giving up five runs. Waddell pitched the remainder of the game and struck out four.
