HIGH POINT – Freshman setter Kayla Finnerty recorded her first career double-double and senior Brooke Stamnes had a season-low one attack error, but High Point University was still able to beat the North Carolina A&T volleyball team in three sets (25-20, 18, 16) Tuesday night at the Millis Center.
Finnerty finished with 21 assists and a career-high 11 digs, and Stamnes and sophomore Samara Brown had eight kills apiece. Sophomores Jasmine Lindor and Alyssa Pitts also had five blocks apiece.
But the Panthers (6-6) seemed to get stronger as the match progressed. The Aggies were also resilient early. A&T jumped out to a 9-4 lead in the first set, but an attack error by Brown completed an 8-3 run that helped the Panthers tie the set at 12. Sophomore Marteen Hill blasted a kill past Abby Broadstreet to give the Aggies the lead back. Two different block assist by Pitt and Lindor helped the Aggies take control of the set again at 19-15.
HPU scored the next four points forcing the Aggies to call timeout. After the timeout, HPU took its first lead of the set since it was 1-0 on a Pitt attack error. That lead ballooned to three on a Carly Jimenez service ace. Jimenez's service error cut the Panthers lead to 22-20, but two kills by Camryn Freiberg and a kill from Haley Barnes gave the Panthers the first set.
The Panthers posted a hitting percentage of .250 in the first set, but over the final two sets HPU hit .322 to pull away from A&T (2-6). Meanwhile, the Aggies had a combined hitting percentage of .014 to sway the match in HPU's favor.
Freiberg led the Panthers with 11 kills and three blocks, while Megan Kennedy finished with 10 kills and nine digs.
There will be a 10-day layoff for the Aggies before they begin conference play at N.C. Central, Friday, Sept. 25 at 7 p.m.
