ANNAPOLIS, Md. – North Carolina A&T women's basketball returned to its roots on Sunday night by doing what they traditionally do and that's be one of the best defensive teams in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference.
The Aggies are now just looking for the timely field goals that will help them get their first win of the season as they fell to 0-3 with a 52-48 loss to Navy at Alumni Hall. After allowing their first two opponents to combine to shoot close to 50 percent from the floor, the Aggies were much tougher on the Midshipmen by holding them to 35.2 percent shooting.
But the Aggies, who shot 30.6 percent from the floor, were not able to complete their rally late. Graduate center Aprill McRae led the Aggies with 12 points and 12 rebounds on 6-for-9 shooting.
The Midshipmen (2-1) led by nine with 43 seconds remaining in the game. Charnise Tyler started a late rally by knocking down two free throws. After a Marina Muenster turnover for Navy, the Aggies called timeout. They came of the timeout and scored on an Adriana Nazario 3-pointer with 25 seconds remaining to cut Navy's lead to four, 50-46. N.C. A&T would then force another Midshipmen turnover, this time by Sarita Condie with 19 seconds remaining.
The Aggies, however, were not able to capitalize again as Dana Brown's three missed the mark and fell into the hands of Condie for the rebound. Ashanti Kennedy sealed the game with two free throws with seven seconds remaining. Kennedy led the Midshipmen with 16 points and six rebounds. Kennedy and McRae were the only two players in the game to score in double figures.
The Aggies will travel to New Mexico over Thanksgiving to participate in the University of New Mexico's Thanksgiving tournament. N.C. A&T opens with Duquesne on Friday, Nov. 27 at 7 p.m. They will play either Southern Utah or New Mexico on Saturday.
