HIGH POINT – Jillian Nobles, Brooke Stamnes, and Te'Borah Hawkins-Hollingsworth each recorded seven kills for the North Carolina A&T volleyball team who dropped a 3-0 (25-14, 18, 19) decision to Davidson Saturday afternoon.
The Aggies who are competing at the High Point University Classic fell to 1-13 overall. Davidson (7-4) suffered a 3-2 setback to Murray State on Friday in its first match of the tournament. A&T will close out the HPU Classic by facing Murray State later this evening at 5 p.m.
A kill from Hawkins-Hollingsworth helped the Aggies nip at Davidson's 11-10 lead in the first set. But the Wildcats used a 14-4 rally to grab the first win.
After trailing 16-6 in the second set, A&T tried to get within reach when it scored five straight points to cut Davidson's lead to 16-11. However the Wildcats sustained their lead to close out the set.
The Aggies put up a tough fight in the third set and took advantage of a pair of Davidson errors to trail the Wildcats 8-7. Davidson pushed the game out of A&T's reach when it put together a 9-1 rally to extend its lead to 17-8.
Liz Martino (14) and Chelsea Fox (10) both finished in double-figures in assists for the Aggies. It marks the third time this season that Martino and Fox have tallied double-digit assists in the same match. Ashley Johnson recorded 14 digs.
“We played much better at times during this match,” head coach Hal Clifton said. “We are making too many errors and that has hurt our performance. If we could string points together that would help. We need to be more consistent.”
