GREENSBORO - Errors and the bat of Olivia Poplin helped UNC
Wilmington sweep North Carolina A&T in a softball doubleheader at the Lady
Aggies Softball Complex on Wednesday. The Seahawks defeated the Aggies 12-0 in
the first game and 14-3 in the second.
Poplin went 2-for-2 with a double, three RBI and two runs
scored in Game 1. In the second game, she had an additional two RBI, a double
and scored a run. Poplin and the Seahawks were aided by six A&T errors in
Game 2. Five of those errors came in a 10-run third inning.
The Aggies (1-9) did get on the board in the second contest.
After eight consecutive scoreless innings by Seahawks pitching, Sophomore
Zabresha Blakeney's RBI sacrifice fly to right scored Tiffany Macklin from
third in the fourth inning. A&T picked up two more runs in the fifth as
Detavia Keenan reached on an error by UNCW shortstop Camry Wagner.
She moved to second on an Alejandra Barcenas groundout, and
eventually moved to third on a wild pitch by reliever Darian Roberts. Junior
Sabrina Edmonds put runners at first and third with a walk, which was followed
by a Jax Woodard groundout that scored Keenan from third.
Freshman Alexiss Dominguez then picked up the Aggies only
extra base hit of the day when she doubled to right center to score Edmonds for
the Aggies' third run of the day. The game would end on a Macklin strikeout. KC Shue also had a combined five RBI for the
Seahawks (8-11).
Casey Rowland (7-6) picked up the win in Game 1, while
senior Ashira Dobison (0-5) took the loss. Jordyn Schmidt (6-3) was the Game 2
winner, while freshman Janika May (1-4) was the losing pitcher. The Aggies will
open up play in the Winthrop Invitational on Friday when they face Western
Illinois in Rock Hill, S.C., at noon.
The Aggies will also face Kent State, Harvard, Winthrop and Georgia this
weekend.
