LANDOVER, Md. - After competing two days at the 2013 MEAC
Indoor Track and Field Championships, the A&T men find themselves in fourth
place with 23 points. The women are fifth with 20 points. The Norfolk State men
are comfortably in first place with 67 points, 29 points ahead of second-place
Hampton.
On the women's side, Hampton leads second-place Maryland
Eastern Shore by 10.5 points.
The Aggies have yet to win any individual titles, but they
will have some opportunities on Saturday. In the men's 60 meters, redshirt
senior Darryl Williams and senior Torrance Womack will be in the finals after
producing the second-and-fourth-highest qualifying times (6.85, 6.90)
respectively on Friday. Womack will also go after the 200 meter title on
Saturday. Sophomore Keenan Smith will also go after the men's triple title,
while Jenea McCammon's 8.67 qualifying time in the women's 60 meter hurdles
assured her a spot in the finals on Saturday.
The Aggies 4x400 meter relay teams also have a chance to win
gold on Saturday. The Aggies distance medley relay teams helped to build this
confidence. On the women's side, Janay Ferrell, Roshel Bygraves, Kristin Rush
and Janessa Benn scored eight points, finished second, by running a 12:02.43.
Bygraves will compete in the 4x400 Saturday.
The men's distance medley came in third place and added six
points to the Aggies' total. Landover native Christian Harrison, Ashanti
Felder, Steven Liggins and Saeed Jones finished the event in 10:25.62 for third
place.
Also scoring for the men were long jumpers Marquis Noble and
Smith. Noble placed in third with a jump of 22-feet, 9 ¾ inches. Smith followed
him in fourth place after jumping 22-feet, 7 ¼ inches. The duo combined to
score 11 points for A&T. Cliff Obodo scored in the men's high jump, an
event that the Aggies have not traditionally competed in. He came in sixth with
his best jump going 6-feet, 5-inches. Demetrius Green picked up two points with
his seventh place finish in the men's weigh throw (40-feet, 6-inches).
The top individual scorer for the women was high jumper
Nakita Gray. Gray finished third as she cleared the bar at 5-feet, 8-inches for
six points. Sydni Cobb scored two points with a seventh-place finish in the
women's weight throw as she tossed it 48-feet, 2-inches.
The championships,
being held at Prince George's S&L Complex, conclude Saturday.
