GREENSBORO - Sophomore catcher Sabrina Edmonds opened the 2012 season with some nagging injuries and later had a death in the family. The two circumstances forced her to miss some action early in the season. It also contributed to her getting off to a slow start at the plate. At one point, she was hitting .083.

Those days are gone. On Wednesday, Edmonds continued to torment opposing pitchers as she hit what turned out to be the game-winning RBI single to lead the North Carolina A&T softball team to a 5-4 win over Elon in the first game of a doubleheader played at the Lady Aggies Softball Complex. The Aggies lost the second game 7-1.

The win in Game 1 snapped a 12-game losing streak for the Aggies (13-32). Edmonds led the way by going 2-for-3 with three RBI. On March 9, Edmonds was hitting a season-low .083. Today, she is hitting .324 with 26 RBI and a MEAC-leading 10 home runs. In her last nine games, she is 15-for-28 (.536) from the plate with four home runs, two doubles and 15 RBI.

A&T came into its half of the fifth inning leading 3-2. Alexandra McAfee opened the inning with a double to center field. A sacrifice bunt by Dominique Smith moved her to third base. Elon first baseman Sarah Little helped McAfee score, and the Aggies take a 4-2 lead, by booting a Detavia Kenan grounder.  The error allowed Kenan to advance to second, and another Elon error allowed Tranea Jones to reach.

With runners on the corners, the stage was set for Edmonds' heroics. Edmonds took the first pitch she saw from Elon reliever Erin O'Shea and turned it into an RBI single that gave the Aggies a 5-2 advantage.

Edmonds' RBI was essential as the Phoenix rallied in the sixth. Little opened the inning with a single of off A&T starter Ashira Dobison. Brittney Wright, who entered the game in the fifth inning, followed with a two-run homer to pull the Phoenix to within one.

Despite running into numerous Phoenix scoring threats, Dobison somehow was able to keep Elon off the scoreboard for the rest of the game.

After Wright's home run, McKenzie Harrelson reached on an error. But Dobison struck out Alyssa Quintana and got Carleigh Nester to fly out to center field to end the sixth.

In the Elon seventh, Camille Hill singled to open the inning. Tomeka Watson reached on a Jones error at third to put runners on first and second. Again, Dobison (12-17) pitched her way around the jam. O'Shea struck out swinging and Little flied out to put the Aggies to within one out of winning the game.

 More adversity came, however, as Dobison walked Wright to load the bases. But Ali Ford flew out to center field to give A&T the win.

Little and Kaitlyn Piazzolla had two RBI apiece to lead the Phoenix to the Game 2 win. Erica Turner had two hits for the Aggies in the second game. Edmonds had the Aggies only RBI to give her four for the day. McAfee (1-13) took the loss, while Chelsea White pitched a complete-game four-hitter to earn the win.

The Aggies will play their final three games of the regular season this weekend when they host archrival N.C. Central at the LASC. The two teams will play a Saturday doubleheader at 1 p.m., before playing the series finale Sunday at noon.
