CONWAY, S.C. - It only took 94 pitches for Ashira Dobison to
pick up her third win of the season as North Carolina A&T defeated fellow
MEAC member Hampton 1-0 at the Coastal Carolina Invitational on Friday. The
game does not count toward the conference standings.
Dobison (3-6) pitched a complete-game one-hitter, walked
just one and struck out two at CCU Softball Field. The Aggies lost their second
game of the invite 9-0 to host Coastal Carolina.
The Aggies (3-9) only run of the game didn't come on some
big hit. To start the fourth, Hampton starter Travonn Byrd hit Aggies sophomore
third baseman Tranea Jones with a pitch. Freshman right fielder Raven Smith was
also given a gift by Byrd as she battled her for 11 pitches before being
walked. Detavia Kenan moved both runners into scoring position as she grounded
out to first.
Erica Turner picked up the RBI as she slapped down a
grounder that Hampton catcher Brook Boykin picked up and threw to first to throw
out Turner. Turner's slapper was good enough to score Jones from third to give
the Dobison the only run she would need.
Dobison did not allow a hit over the first 5.1 innings of
the game. The Pirates only hit came in the sixth as Bian Vallejo singled
through the left side. Vallejo moved into scoring position thanks to a
groundout by Nin Ferguson.
Vallejo advanced no farther than second as Dobison got
pinch-hitter to foul out to Aggie first baseman Juanita Jernigan to end the
inning. Dobison retired the Pirates in order in the seventh. The Aggies only
had two hits in the game as Dominique Smith singled and Raven Smith doubled.
In their second game of the day, the Aggies managed just three
hits against Coastal starter Kiana Quolas. Quolas pitched five innings and
struck out seven. Sarah Maples, Jazmine Daigle and Kory Hayden had two RBI
apiece. Maples went 2-for-3 with three runs scored, while Daigle had two hits
in four at-bats for the Chanticleers.
The Aggies continue play in the invitational Saturday with
an 11 a.m., game against Coastal Carolina and a 3:30 p.m., game against
LaSalle.
