Track and Field Heads To Manhattan

Greensboro, N.C.-The men and women of North Carolina A&T's track and field program hope to keep their momentum and success going as they head into their third meet of the 2012 indoor season. The Aggies travel to New York this weekend to compete at The Armory for the 2012 New Balance Collegiate Invitational.

The Aggies will compete amongst the best athletes in the nation at one of the biggest and most competitive indoor events in the country.

"This weekend will be another challenge for us in terms of sustaining our focus against some of the best teams in the country," said James Daniels, A&T's interim director of track and field programs. "The New Balance Invitational will have team such as Arkansas, Baylor, LSU,  South Carolina, Tennessee and  Texas A&M-who are the 2011 defending national champions- just to name a few, along with other top teams in this region."

The Aggies should not be intimidated by those teams considering the great start they are off to this season. Shakia Forbes has won the long jump in the Aggies first two events this season, including jumping 20-feet, 2-inches last week at the prestigious Penn State National Open.

Men's sprinter Torrance Womack is one of the best runners in the nation. He currently has the best 300 meter time in the nation, a time of 33.42, ran at the Virginia Tech Invitational on Jan. 13. He is ranked 16th nationally in the 200 meters after finishing fourth with a time of 21.30 in the 200-meter invitational at Penn State.

Last week was also prosperous for men's sprinter Earl House. In an event filled with professional athletes, House was only one of two colligates to reach the 60-meter final.

The Aggies also competed in Chapel Hill last week, where junior Janessa Benn improved her time in the mile by nine seconds from the first time she ran it this season at Virginia Tech three weeks ago.

Junior Jenea McCammon and sophomore Roshel Bygrave finished second and third respectively in the 500-meter run at Penn State. Bygrave's time of 1:15.88 was a personal best as she dropped three seconds off  her time from the Virginia Tech Invitational. Redshirt sophomore Paris Reddick-Simmons is also off to an excellent start. He finished second in the 800-meter run at Penn State.

"I was very pleased with our effort this past weekend," said Daniels. "We are seeking each week to sustain our focus and prepare to the best of our ability every week for our competitions."

Competition for the New Balance Invitational kicks-off Friday, Feb. 3.
