Morgan State Beats A&T In OT

BALTIMORE - The classified ad for the North Carolina A&T women's basketball team goes like this: Help Wanted. The desired candidate must be a college basketball player willing to be a leader. Candidate must be able to coach while playing in the game. Toughness required. Take charge attitude is a must. Upperclassmen preferred, but any 2011-12 player on the Aggies roster will do.

Two different Aggies posted double-doubles Saturday afternoon at Morgan State, including JaQuayla Berry's 14 points and 11 rebounds, but the Bears overcame an 11-point second-half deficit to defeat A&T 85-83 in overtime at Hill Field House. Redshirt sophomore Amber Calvin had 20 points and five assists. Sophomore Tiffanie Adair's 20 points, nine rebounds, five assists and three blocks were all career highs.

The loss dropped the Aggies to 7-11 overall and 2-3 in the MEAC. It is unfamiliar territory for Aggies coach Patricia Cage-Bibbs. The Aggies have not been below .500 in the conference since Feb. 25, 2006, when they lost to Norfolk State 59-57 to drop to 7-8 in the MEAC. The Aggies current position in the standings has Bibbs posting help wanted notices for leaders.

"I'm looking for some leadership from my upperclassmen," said Bibbs. "Who is my coach on the floor? There are but so many timeouts you can call. People who have been in this program, people who have won in this program, need to be able to elevate others. Nothing has changed. My expectations are the same."

Bibbs' philosophy may be the same, but the team is not. Second-leading scorer Tracy King did not play Saturday after sustaining a knee injury. Two-year starter Mikala Scott did not return for the spring semester for personal reasons, and freshman Adriana Nazario is just returning to the lineup after a significant layoff because of injury. In addition, Calvin has had nagging injuries all season long.

Despite the missing parts, the Aggies were able to take a 70-68 lead with 2:17 remaining in regulation after Nikia Gorham grabbed a Berry miss, and whipped a pass to an open Jessica Lyons, who hit a 15-footer.

Morgan State center Amarah Williams answered with consecutive layups, the first coming after she took a pass lobbed over the top of the Aggies defense to score. The Bears took the lead when Williams put back an Omara Parker miss. Calvin tied the game at 72 with two free throws at the 1:26 mark.

The Aggies' next two possessions resulted in a turnover and a missed jump shot, leaving the Bears with an opportunity to win the game. They took three shots before time expired. But just as the teams walked to their respective benches for overtime, one of the referees indicated there was a foul on Aggies freshman Kelsei Ewings.

Tracy Carrington hit two free throws with 0.4 seconds remaining to give Morgan State a 74-72 lead. But in another weird twist, the Bears were called for a foul away from the ball as the Aggies were trying to inbound. Calvin sent the game into overtime by hitting the pressure free throws, despite the Bears calling timeout twice during her time at the line.

During the extra period, the Bears took an 85-80 lead. Berry kept the Aggies in the game with a drive to the basket that resulted in a layup and foul. Berry completed the 3-point play to pull the Aggies to within two with 1:20 remaining.

After Parker missed the front end of a one-and-one, the Aggies had one final chance to extend the game. But a turnover gave Morgan State (4-14, 1-4) its first conference win of the season.

In addition to searching for more leadership, Bibbs would also like to see her 6-2 center, Gorham, stay on the floor longer. She had 15 points and 12 rebounds on 7-for-12 shooting. But she only played 29 minutes after fouling out in regulation.

She would also like to see her offense executed with more efficiency. When the Aggies were in control of the game, there offense was complete with sharp, crisp passes in and out of the post, and they got open looks late in the shot clock. Even on missed layups, they were able to rebound and score as they took a 43-28 lead with 2 ½ minutes remaining in the first half.

Three consecutive turnovers and solid MSU 3-point shooting got the lead down to eight, 45-37 at the half.

"You don't need an Einstein to figure out what I want you to do," said Bibbs. "We've got a lot of opportunities and options with our offense, but when you see people holding the ball, that's not our offense."

The Bears got the lead down to four within the first minute of the second half, but a 9-2 run capped by a Calvin 3-pointer gave the Aggies a 54-43 lead with 14:29 remaining. Two Dekeisha Mathis 3-pointers sparked a 10-0 Bears run that changed the complexity of the game.

"My heart is not heavy," said Bibbs. "I know when we start winning, we're going to get on a roll. We're right there, but it's in the upperclassmen's hands."
