GREENSBORO-Sophomore Jeana Daniels collected 10 kills, her
fourth straight match with 10 or more kills, in the North Carolina A&T
volleyball team's losing effort on Sunday afternoon against rival North
Carolina Central University at Corbett Sports Complex.
The Aggies (1-24, 1-5), sporting special pink uniforms for
their Dig Pink Match in recognition of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, were
swept by the Eagles (3-21, 3-3) by scores of 25-22, 13, 14.
"We were very pleased with the turnout and the crowd was
super," said head coach Hal Clifton. "It
made for a fun match. We want to thank everyone who made donations for our Dig
Pink Match. Every dollar helps fight breast cancer."
The Aggies had a better attacking percentage on Sunday
against the Eagles (.133), than they did in their September match (.119) at NCCU.
A&T also improved in their attack
percentage from last Sunday, when they had just a .097 attacking percentage in
their loss to Coppin State.
Daniels, in addition to extending her double-digit kill
streak, posted a career high with a .500 attack percentage on Sunday. She made just one attack error in 18 total
attacks. Sophomore Tatiana Cooper had
the second-highest kill total on the team, collecting six for the Aggies.
The Aggies had a strong start to the match, making for an
exciting Set 1. The Aggies had the lead
for most of the opening, until a kill by N.C. Central outside hitter Dayanna
Arrufat tied up the first set at 14 points.
Daniels gave the lead back to the Aggies in the next play with a
kill. The score was knotted again at 21
points until another kill by Arrufat gave the Eagles the lead, which they did
not relinquish again in the set. Daniels
collected five of her 10 kills in the first set.
"We competed really well in the first set," Clifton said.
"We passed well and were able to side out. We made a couple of unforced errors
that cost us the set."
N.C. A&T is 0-2
against N.C. Central thus far this season, after being swept by the Eagles in
Durham on Sept. 23, giving Darlene Mitchell, the N.C. Central assistant coach, the
season's edge over her twin, Arlene, who is the A&T assistant coach. Both Darlene and Arlene graduated from
A&T in 2006, and competed for the Aggies volleyball team.
The Aggies will host their final two home games of the
regular season next weekend. They host
Florida A&M University on Friday, Nov. 4 at 6 p.m., and welcome Bethune Cookman
on Sunday, Nov. 6 at noon at Corbett Sports Center. The Aggies will honor
senior Bridget McCaskill before Sunday's match.
