HIGH POINT - If Saturday is any indication, everything is going according to plan for the North Carolina A&T volleyball team. With nine freshmen and one sophomore, the belief is that the more sets the Aggies participate in, the better their play will be over the course of the season.
Evidence of this theory was evident Saturday afternoon at the High Point University Classic at the Millis Center. The Aggies lost their first match 3-0 (25-12, 25-9, 25-12) to host High Point. Freshman Tatiana Cooper had five kills and eight digs in the match.
Later in the day, the Aggies battled for three tough sets against UNC Wilmington before losing 3-0 (25-19, 25-21, 25-16). Freshman Jeana Daniels had her first career double-double with 11 kills and 11 digs on a .276 hitting percentage. Daniels also had two blocks. Freshman Chelsea Fox added 10 digs, and lone senior Amber Inman had 19 assists and seven digs.
After a Fox kill in the first set against UNCW tied the set at 17, the Seahawks scored the next three points to put distance between themselves and the Aggies. Sophomore Andrea Evans kept the Aggies alive with a kill to make it 24-19. But UNCW earned the win on a ball handling error by Inman.
The Aggies came out with even more intensity in the second set. Jeana Daniels sparked a 4-1 run that ended with a Fox kill and a 13-10 Aggies lead. The Aggies kept the lead until a Keli Clear kill gave the Seahawks a 16-15 advantage. Two Emily Mohrman kills and a service ace by Jennifer Mallard put UNCW up by four.
Two kills by Evans and a Fox service ace helped the Aggies tie the set at 21. The Seahawks (1-2) put together four straight kills to close out the set. The Seahawks jumped out to a 15-5 lead in the third to put the Aggies (0-3) away.
N.C. A&T returns to action 6 p.m., Friday when it host Savannah State at Corbett Sports.
