GREENSBORO - Junior guard Nic Simpson thought the crowd gathered at Corbett Sports Center for the North Carolina A&T men's basketball home opener Tuesday night against North Carolina Wesleyan needed something to get it all the way involved.
They received a couple of things. At the 7 ½ minute mark of the first half, sophomore R.J. Buck intercepted a pass and went to the other end for a dunk. Seconds later, Simpson picked up a steal, raced down the floor and tossed a lob pass to Buck on the break for another dunk.
The crowd erupted, and the Aggies 100-66 blow out win was in its beginning stages.
"There was a lot murmuring, but there wasn't any full blown cheers yet,'' said Simpson. "We knew they were anxious to get on their feet. We just needed a play that could do that."
The Buck dunks were a part of a 15-4 run that gave the Aggies a 40-24 lead with 3:53 remaining in the first half. A Simpson 3-pointer and a Coleman layup helped the Aggies (1-2) end the half with a 51-32 advantage.
"We started the season with Ohio State who is No. 5 in the nation and Morehead State who is picked to win the (Ohio Valley Conference)," said Aggies head coach Jerry Eaves. "That was a tough way to start the season. This was a very good game for us because it gave us a good feel about ourselves, and it gave us some success."
Coleman led the Aggies with 17 points and 13 rebounds. Simpson added 16 points and sophomore Adrian Powell finished with 14 points and seven rebounds. Alex Murray had 14 points and 11 rebounds for N.C. Wesleyan.
The Aggies return to action Thursday night at 7 when they face the University of Florida in Gainesville, Fla.
