DURHAM – Three North Carolina A&T volleyball players
recorded
career days and first-year head coach Toni Conway earned her first win
as the Aggies head coach with a 3-1 (25-11, 17-25, 25-21, 25-22) win
over Winston-Salem State during the second day of the North Carolina
Central Volleyball Tournament. Later in the day, the Aggies lost to
N.C.
Central 3-0 (26-24, 25-17, 25-19).
Senior Janae Mitchell posted a career-high 14 kills to go along with
11
digs. She eclipsed that career-high with 15 kills against N.C.
Central.
Mitchell's double-double effort against WSSU was the fifth of her
career.
Fellow senior Tiffany Mellette had 10 kills and a career-high 20 digs.
Mellette also matched a career-high with five service aces. Junior
setter Amber Inman posted a career-high 36 assists.
It was apparent early that the Aggies might post some impressive. They
put together their most dominate set of the season in the first. A
6-0
run was capped off by a Mellette ace to give N.C. A&T an 11-4
lead. The
Aggies never let the Rams get any closer than seven the rest of the
way,
and even ended the set on a 7-0 run.
The Rams gathered themselves to take the second set. The two teams
went
back-and-forth in the third set before the Aggies took control with a
Mellette kill that gave N.C. A&T a 22-20 lead. An Ashley Harris
attack
error put the Aggies up by three.
After a ball handling error by Inman, sophomore middle hitter Bree
Dotstry put the Aggies up three with a kill and Jasmine Frazier ended
the set with an attack error for WSSU. The Aggies had a little trouble
closing out the Rams in the fourth set after taking a 24-18 lead. The
Rams scored the next four points before Alexandria Brown's service
error
gave the Aggies win No. 1.
In addition to her 15 kills against N.C. Central, Mitchell also had a
.300 hitting percentage. Mellette added eight kills and six digs. The
Aggies will play at Davidson on Tuesday before returning home to play
UNC Greensboro at 6 p.m.
