GREENSBORO –
North Carolina A&T and S.C. State went back-and-forth over the
first two
sets of their volleyball match on Sunday before the Bulldogs took
control over the final two sets to earn a 3-1 win over the Aggies
(23-25, 25-23, 25-19, 25-15).
Janae Mitchell had a career game for N.C. A&T. The senior out of
Fort
Worth, Texas slammed down 20 kills on a .321 hitting percentage.
Mitchell made just three attack errors, and she recorded her seventh
career double-double by adding 11 digs to her totals.
Junior Amber Inman added 41 assists and 10 digs, and fifth-year senior
Tiffany Mellette had a career-high 18 digs.
The Aggies did something in the first set they have done only one
other
time this season. They won it. S.C. State's Elizabeth Webb put that in
doubt with a kill that gave the Bulldogs a 22-21 lead. But Bree
Dotstry,
who recorded eight kills without an attack error, tapped a kill
between
Bulldog defenders to tie the set at 22.
Jade Sanford gave the Bulldogs the lead again, but the Aggies would
not
allow another S.C. State point. Mitchell connected on two straight
kills
to give the Aggies a 24-23 lead. Sanford closed the set with an attack
error to give the Aggies the win in the first set.
The two teams battled each other again for the win in the second set.
The Aggies trailed 21-19 before Mitchell brought the Aggies back
again.
Two consecutive kills by Mitchell tied the set at 21. Freshman Andrea
Evans' attack landed inside the 10-foot line for a 22-21 Aggies lead.
After an Aggies attack error, Dotstry landed another one of her kills
inside the line for a 23-22 Aggies advantage.
The Bulldogs offense then came alive. Bria Brimmer's kill tied the
game.
Peri Ligons and Jarne Gleaton followed with kills to give the Bulldogs
the win. The Bulldogs closed the match by recording a .301 hitting
percentage over the final two sets to earn the win.
The Aggies are back in action 6 p.m., Friday when they face
Bethune-Cookman.
