GREENSBORO –
The problem for North Carolina A&T Tuesday night was not staying
competitive. It was trying to get ahead. The Aggies fought from behind
the entire match in a 3-0 loss (29-27, 25-22, 25-15) to arch-rival
N.C.
Central in volleyball action at Corbett Sports Center.
Senior Tiffany Mellette recorded double-figure kills for the fifth
time
in six matches as she recorded 11 kills and seven digs. Fellow senior
Janae Mitchell added nine kills and five digs. But the Aggies took the
lead just three times over three sets.
In the first set, the Eagles led 20-16 before the Aggies made a 4-0
run
that included a Mitchell kill and an Amber Inman service ace. The
Eagles
reclaimed control of the set by scoring the next three points off
Aggie
errors. Avaniki Campbell put the Eagles on the verge of victory with a
kill, but the Aggies kept fighting up hill.
An Eagles attack error and a service ace by Kaneisha Winfield pulled
the
Aggies to within one at 24-23. Mellette tied the game with a solo
block.
But as the two teams sparred for the first set, the Aggies never
claimed
game point. Instead, N.C. Central's Belinda Behncke-Biney's kill and
Mellette's attack error gave the Eagles a 29-27 first set victory.
The second set saw the Aggies fighting from behind again. Down 22-17,
the Aggies closed to within two at 24-22 on an attack error by
Sashalee
Wallen. But Behncke-Biney placed a kill in the between several Aggie
defenders for the 2-0 lead. The Eagles posted a .440 hitting
percentage
in the third set to put the Aggies away.
The Aggies recognized National Breast Care Awareness Month. The Aggies
volleyball team wore pink T-shirts in warmups and Aggie fans wore pink
ribbons to encourage people to receive mammograms and other tests that
can diagnose breast cancer in its early stages.
The Aggies are back in action 6 p.m., Friday night when they face
Norfolk State at Corbett Sports Center.
