GREENSBORO – North Carolina Agricultural & Technical State University Athletics will celebrate Champions Weekend on Saturday, Aug. 29, during the football team's 2026 opener against Morgan State at Truist Stadium. The Aggies will celebrate 14 championship teams and one team that made the NCAA Division I-FCS playoffs. The title teams will be celebrated in multiples of 5s and 10s. As part of the celebration, each coach and team member of those championship teams will receive two complimentary tickets.

Student-athletes and coaches from those teams should fill out the form if they want to participate in the celebration on Aug. 29. The A&T Athletics Department must confirm all applicants. Once the applicant is confirmed, digital tickets will be sent. The following teams will be celebrated:

1975-76 Men's Basketball Regular-Season and Tournament Champions (MEAC)
They celebrated their golden anniversary last February during men's basketball season. The Aggie men won the 1975-76 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) co-regular-season championship before winning the 1976 MEAC tournament title. The 75-76 Aggies were led by James Sparrow, who averaged 21.0 points per game, the third-highest scoring average in program history. The team also included Sinclair Colbert, who averaged a double-double at 11.0 points and 13.0 rebounds per game. A&T went 20-6 overall and 11-1 in conference play, defeating regular-season co-champion Morgan State 83-77 in the MEAC tournament title game. They faced and lost to Providence in the first round of the NIT.

1980-81 Men's Basketball Regular-Season Champions (MEAC)
Call this the anomaly. Before the A&T men's basketball team won seven straight MEAC tournament titles, all over Howard University, they did lose to the Bison in the MEAC title game in 1981. Before then, however, the Aggies won the 1980-81 regular-season MEAC title. They are celebrating their 45th anniversary of winning that title. The Aggies went 21-8 overall and 8-4 in conference play. The Aggies reached the NIT against Duke, where the Blue Devils won 79-65. Sophomore James Anderson led the team that season by averaging 17.8 points per game. That same season, Aggie Nation met a freshman named Joe Binion. Binion went on to become one of the most historic players in program history. That season, he averaged 14.6 points per game, the best freshman scoring average before Lewis Walker broke the record last season.

1985-86 – Men's Basketball Regular-Season and Tournament Champions (MEAC)
Thanks to the 80s, Aggieland can celebrate an anniversary of a men's basketball team almost every year. The 1985-86 team is celebrating the 40th anniversary of winning the MEAC regular-season and tournament titles. These tournament titles came with automatic bids to the NCAA tournament. After a thrilling 53-52 win over Howard at the Greensboro Coliseum, the Aggies earned an automatic bid to play the Kansas Jayhawks. During the season, the Aggies went 22-8 overall and 12-2 in conference play. George Cale, Claude Williams, and Thomas Griffis averaged in double figures, with Griffis serving as the floor general, averaging 4.6 assists per game.

1986 Football Regular-Season Champions (MEAC)02400_Hooker
The sun came out with the 1986 A&T football team trailing by four points. Alan Hooker throws a touchdown to Herbert Harbison and the Aggies win. Then the sun goes back in. Or something like that. Regardless of how it happened, the 1986 Aggies won the program's first-ever outright MEAC title, going 9-3 overall and 4-1 in conference play. The '86 team, celebrating their 40th anniversary, also made the program's first-ever NCAA Division I-AA playoff appearance when it faced off against Georgia Southern. Hooker led the Aggies at the quarterback position. The junior threw for 1,907 yards and 17 touchdowns while completing 59.4 percent of his passes.

Most of those throws went to Harbison, who caught a single-season program-record 63 receptions for 883 yards and seven touchdowns (the record has been broken). Both Hooker and Harbison earned first-team All-MEAC honors, while defensive tackle Akinyele Igunmuyiwa (formerly known as Ernest Reddick) led the defense by earning first-team All-MEAC accolades.

1991 Football Regular-Season Champions (MEAC)
The 1991 A&T football team became legendary head coach Bill Hayes's first MEAC championship team as they celebrate their 35th anniversary. Hayes would go on to win two more conference titles, including another one the following season. A win over Grambling State and College Football Hall of Fame coach Eddie Robinson highlighted the '91 season. After a 31-26 setback to Delaware State cost the Aggies an undefeated season in the conference, the Aggies recovered the next week to blow out S.C. State 49-21 to earn an invitation to the Heritage Bowl. Dual-threat quarterback Connell Maynor and All-American tight end Craig Thompson led the Aggies.

They had one of the best defensive lines in Division I-AA football, which included three first-team All-MEAC performers – Reggie White, Kevin Little, and Knox Thompson. In 11 regular-season games, the Aggies only gave up 14.8 points per game.

1243_Pablo Smith1996 Men's Indoor Track and Field (MEAC)
The 1996 men's indoor track and field became the first indoor team in program history to win a conference title. They followed up on the 1995 men's outdoor team's MEAC championship. The team is celebrating its 30th anniversary. Led by legendary director of track and field Roy "Spaceman" Thompson, the Aggies shared the title with the University of Maryland Eastern Shore. Led by historic high jumper Odell Benders, Jr., and the late great sprinter Shenan Robinson, the Aggies had an outstanding collection of student-athletes who were also dynamic in the classroom. The team also included sprinting star Pablo Smith.

1996 Men's Outdoor Track and Field (MEAC)
The Aggies made the sweep complete for the year of 1996 by claiming the MEAC outdoor title. It was another outright title, marking the Aggies' third straight outdoor title and their fourth straight title overall, including indoor. The 30th anniversary of this accomplishment should be treasured. The Aggies did not win another MEAC title for 21 years after this group of student-athletes dominated the league over three years. Thompson earned outstanding coach honors from the meet, and Pablo Smith won the 100 meters, the 200m, and the 4x100-meter and 4x400-meter relays.

2016 A&T Football NCAA Division I-playoff team
Eight months after Tarik Cohen finished ripping through the Alcorn State defense at the inaugural Celebration Bowl in Atlanta, the 2016 football team entered the season as the MEAC favorites, and for the most part the Aggies did not disappoint. They beat Division I-FBS Kent State 39-36 in quadruple overtime and then dominated the rest of the MEAC until starting quarterback Lamar Raynard tore his pectoral muscle before A&T's game at Delaware State on Nov. 12. The Aggies were able to beat the Hornets without their star quarterback. Still, they did not fare as well against archrival NCCU the following week.

Despite the loss to NCCU, the Aggies still earned a bid to the NCAA Division I-FCS playoffs, losing at Richmond. Cohen rushed for 1,588 yards and 18 touchdowns before the Bears selected him in the fourth round of the 2017 NFL Draft.

The Hampton Pirates had a dynasty going for the early part of the 2010's before Tarrell Robinson and his Aggies finally broke through during the 2015-16 season, not only ending Hampton's consecutive run of MEAC regular-season championships by earning a co-regular-season title with Bethune-Cookman, but Robinson's Aggies also took the tournament title by blowing out Coppin State 65-46 in the championship game. On their way there, they defeated the five-time reigning MEAC champion Pirates in the semifinal round. Christina Carter had 14 points in the MEAC tournament title game, and Aprill McRae was named tournament MVP after scoring 25 points on 9-for-14 shooting against the Pirates the previous night. It would be the first of Robinson's three MEAC tournament titles at A&T.

The Aggies faced Notre Dame in the NCAA tournament.

2020-21 Men's Basketball Regular-Season Champions (MEAC)0436_SouthernDivisionChamps_01
It was an unusual championship but a championship, nonetheless. In the world of the COVID pandemic, it got weird. There were cancellations, postponements, mandatory COVID testing, and once the MEAC season opened, teams had to play opponents on back-to-back days in empty gyms to make the schedule work. From Jan. 30-Feb. 21, the Aggies played Florida A&M four straight games, twice in Greensboro and twice in Tallahassee, Fla. Despite the irregularities, once the Aggies entered conference play, they dominated. Led by one of the best point guards in program history, Kameron Langley, the Aggies went 7-1 in conference play. The Aggies shared the scoring responsibility throughout the season.

Six players averaged between 7.1 and 10.6 points per game. Will Jones was named MEAC Coach of the Year, and the Aggies won their first regular-season title in 30 years. Oh, yeah, back to weird. The Aggies received the No. 1 seed out of the South but never got a chance to play in the MEAC tournament because a positive COVID test within the program sent the Aggies home without playing a game.

2020-21 Women's Basketball Regular-Season and Tournament Champions (MEAC)
The same fate did not befall the women's basketball team during the unusual 2020-21 season. The Aggies got to play in the MEAC tournament, which resulted in two of the biggest 3-point shots in program history. With the Aggies trailing Howard 57-53 with 80 seconds remaining in the title game. Deja Winters spotted up netted a three with 50 seconds remaining. With three seconds remaining, Winters spotted up in the corner and splashed another 3-pointer to lead the Aggies to a 59-57 win over the Bison. The Aggies lost to the N.C. State Wolfpack in the first round of the NCAA tournament in San Antonio, Texas.

The Aggies roster was good enough to win in any climate. Three Aggies averaged in double figures, including Winters, freshman Sean Kelly Darks, and Chanin Scott, who averaged 14.3 points and 8.6 rebounds per game.

The 2021 MEAC title holds significance because it ushered in the Kim Terrell-Kearney dominance. It marked Terrell-Kearney's first MEAC title as the Aggies head coach. The Aggies have won every MEAC tournament title since then except in 2025. The 2020-21 regular-season title was also the first of what would become six straight regular-season titles under Terrell-Kearney. It also started her string of winning coach of the year for six straight seasons. How talented was the roster? Ana Olaya and Lauren Tomaszewski, two of the best bowlers in program history, were named second-team All-MEAC.

Cameron Strombeck won MEAC Bowler of the Year, and freshman Melanie Katen and Ericka Quesada joined Strombeck in earning first-team honors. How talented was the roster? Katen went on to win two MEAC Bowler of the Year honors.

2021 Men's Outdoor Track and Field (MEAC)
After COVID canceled the 2020 MEAC Track and Field Outdoor Championships, the Aggies got back to their dominance of the MEAC with another title won at the A&T's Marcus T. Johnson Track and Field Complex. It marked the Aggies' fourth straight title and their final outdoor conference championship as a member of the MEAC. The Aggies scored a record-breaking 288 points on their way out of the conference, led by sprinters Javonte Harding and Randolph Ross, Jr. Harding earned the Most Outstanding Track Athlete award by winning the 100 and 200 meters. He was also a part of the conference championship 4x100-meter and 4x400-meter relay teams. The Aggies also claimed gold in the 110 and 400-meter hurdles, the 1500m, the 800m, and the 5000m.

Ross Jr. would go on to win the NCAA national championship in the 400m and in the 4x400 relay along with Daniel Stokes, Akeem Sirleaf, and Trevor Stewart.

2021 Women's Outdoor Track and Field (MEAC)
The Aggie women won their second straight MEAC title after winning the 2019 title and after COVID canceled the 2020 MEAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships. It marked the Aggies' third title in four championships after losing the 2018 title by half a point. The Aggies won the 2021 title with a conference-record 290 points. G'Jasmyne Butler and Loren James led the Aggies. Butler won the Most Outstanding Athlete award from the conference after winning the 800 meters and 3000-meter steeplechase and finished third in the 1500m. Meanwhile, James won the shot put and finished second in the hammer and discus throws. Cambrea Sturgis also took home the conference titles in the 100m, 200m, and 4x100 relay.

The 2021 championship marked the Aggies' final outdoor conference title in the MEAC before joining the Big South. The Aggies would send 14 ladies to the NCAA East Preliminary First Round, and Sturgis would go on to win the NCAA national championships in the 100 and 200m.

MEAC CHAMP BREWER2021 Volleyball Regular-Season and Tournament Champions (MEAC Spring)
Again, COVID made life different. Technically, the young ladies who won the first-ever conference tournament title in program history are the 2020 MEAC Champions. But the fall season was postponed to spring 2021, so why not celebrate its fifth anniversary?

Although it was unusual to play volleyball in the spring, it was a fun and historic season. The Aggies played 13 times and won 11 of those matches, including an 8-0 mark in the MEAC. One of those wins was an impressive 3-2 victory at East Carolina. Then came the MEAC tournament, which really became fun. The Aggies needed an unbelievable five-set win over Delaware State to reach the MEAC title match against Coppin State. The Delaware State match included a 28-26 first-set win and a 36-34 third-set loss. The Aggies prevailed 15-13 in the fifth set before beating Coppin in four sets to win the title. In their first-ever trip to the NCAA tournament, the Aggies beat Rice by forfeit caused by a positive COVID test before losing to Penn State.

Fatimah Shabazz and Aggie legend Edie Brewer, a two-time MEAC Player of the Year, led the team.
