A&T Men's Tennis Loses On The Road to UNC Asheville

Ben Werle and Illia Olefir win at No. 3 doubles.

GREENSBORO – North Carolina A&T's men's tennis team had its three-match winning streak snapped in a 4-1 loss to the Norfolk State Spartans on Wednesday at the Piedmont Indoor Tennis Center.

A&T fell to 8-2 during the season. The Aggies were coming off a successful trip to Orlando, Fla. They went 4-1 at the USTA Tennis Center before having their matchup against the University of South Carolina postponed on Sunday. It appeared the Aggies had not lost a step early against the Spartans. The Aggies took the lead by winning the doubles point.

A&T's No. 1 doubles team, junior Kaua Santos and sophomore Jindrich Brill, won 6-2 over Marcin Andrzejczak and Marcin Dojczynski to improve to 7-2 on the season. At No. 2 doubles, senior Mathieu Dusabaut and freshman Niklas Laux defeated Szymon Malecki and Dominik Simunovic 6-4, clinching the point.

After the doubles matches concluded, the match transitioned to singles play. The freshmen team of Illia Olefir and Ben Werle did not complete their doubles match against Szymon Janzen and Przemek Nikolajuk, stopping with the Spartans leading 5-4. In singles, the teams competed in several three-setters. Before those, Norfolk State's Janzen gave the Spartans their first singles point with a straight-sets win over Olefir, 6-2, 7-5.

Laux lost the first set to Simunovic 6-1, won the second 7-6, but Simunovic took the third 6-1. Norfolk State took a 3-1 lead at No. 2 singles when Malecki beat Brill 6-2, 1-6, 6-2. Norfolk State clinched the match at No. 1 singles.

Another rarity occurred when Santos lost at No. 1 singles. Santos won the first 6-3 over Andrzejczak before Andrzejczak won the second set 6-4. In a competitive third set, Andrzejczak claimed the win for the Spartans and himself, 6-3.
