GREENSBORO – The North Carolina A&T men's tennis team is perfect in every way where it counts. The Aggies have yet to lose a singles match. They have yet to lose a doubles match, and after Thursday's 7-0 win over USC Sumter at the Piedmont Indoor, the Aggies are a perfect 4-0.
Freshman Jindrich Brill's assessment of his doubles win with sophomore Lucas Coupo-Moison may have summed up the entire match against the Fire Ants.
"We destroyed them," said Brill. "We had a good percentage on first serve and good pressure on return. We didn't let them play."
Brill and Coupo-Moison defeated USC Sumpter's Andre Dogbefu and Gian Rojas Rodriguez 6-1 at No. 1 doubles. The duo is now 3-0, and Coupo-Moison complemented Brill's statement by adding that the duo brought more energy and focus than they did last week, which allowed them to take over the match early.
Senior Ian Pedersen and sophomore Said Akbarov quickly followed by earning a 6-2 win over Lachlan Carroll and Aki Harada at No. 3 doubles to clinch the double point for the Aggies. Mathieu Dussaubat and Kaua completed another doubles sweep for A&T by defeating Jakub Sevcik and Stanley Long 6-4 at No. 2 doubles.
But it wasn't easy.
"We were down the majority of the match, but we picked our energy and game up," said Dussaubat. "We fought through it together and had a great win."
Coupo-Moison got the Aggies going in singles play by topping Rojas Rodriguez 6-0, 6-3 at No. 1 singles. Akbarov followed that win with a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 5 singles over Sevcik. Brill gave the Aggies a 4-0 lead and clinched the win with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Long at No. 4 singles.
"I felt great on my serve with the movement," said Brill. "I was being patient enough and aggressive to win."
Pedersen won at No. 2 singles by defeating Aki Harada 6-2, 6-4. Pedersen is now 41-18 in singles matches during his career. Santos also picked up another career win when he defeated Dogbefu 6-3, 6-1 at No. 3 singles. The Aggies' fourth 7-0 win in as many tries was complete when Dussaubat defeated Jet Capasso 6-4, 6-2.
"I didn't play my best match, but I did enough to bring the point home," said Dussaubat. "I'm really happy for the team's performance because we keep fighting." Â
Well, perhaps it wasn't entirely destruction. But it's still perfect.
