FARMVILLE, Va. – A few close losses in singles matches for the North Carolina A&T men's tennis team turned the match in Longwood's favor as the Lancers won a 6-1 decision over A&T Saturday afternoon at Lancers Court.
The doubles point became a battle and a skirmish. The Lancer duo of Timeo Puech and Luis Reis defeated the Aggies No. 1 team of graduate Esteban Lopez and freshman Lucas Coupo-Moison 6-1. The Lopez and Coupo-Moison tandem dropped to 7-5 on the season.
Freshman Said Akbarov and junior Ian Pedersen evened the doubles series with a win at No. 2. They defeated Petar Belosevic and Alejandro Uribe 6-3. Akbarov and Pedersen improved to 9-3 on the season, with all 12 of their matches together coming at No. 2 doubles. Their win left the doubles point in the hands of the No. 3 doubles players.
Longwood scored the point as Seva Rusin and Lorenzo Meschini defeated freshman Kaua Santos and Mathieu Dussaubat 6-3. Santos and Dussaubat dropped to 8-4 on the season. A&T entered doubles play a
Dussaubat defeated Rusin at No. 6 singles with a straight-set, 6-4, 7-5 win. Longwood regained the lead thanks to Reis defeating Santos in straight sets, 6-0, 7-5. Peuch took down Lopez at No. 1 singles to give the Lancers a 3-1 lead. It was only Lopez's second loss of the season at No. 1 singles, dropping to 12-2 on the season.
Akbarov tried to keep the Aggies in the match at No. 3 singles. It did not start well as Uribe defeated him 6-2. Santos gave the Aggies hope in the second set, knocking off Uribe 6-1. The two men went back and forth for the third set before Uribe outlasted Akbarov 7-5 to clinch the win for the Lancers. Longwood took a 5-1 lead when Belosevic beat Coupo-Moison in a No. 2 singles showdown.
Belosevic won the first set 6-4 before Coupo-Moison, like Akbarov, won set No. 2. Coupo-Moison won the set 6-2 but could not hold off Belosevic in the third set, losing 6-4. The match ended with another three-setter as Pedersen claimed the first set against Meschini 6-2. But Meschini claimed the second and third sets 6-4.
Longwood, a former Big South Conference foe of A&T, improved to 7-7. The Aggies dropped to 12-3 on the season. The Aggies travel to Charlotte on Tuesday to face Queens University of Charlotte at 1 p.m.
