ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. – After facing Power Five University of South Carolina on Thursday and losing to the Gamecocks, the North Carolina A&T men's tennis team returned to its winning ways on Friday with a 7-0 win over North Carolina Wesleyan at the Slick Family Foundation Tennis Center.
There was an intense battle for the doubles point. A&T junior Ian Pedersen and his freshman teammate Said Akbarov defeated the Battling Bishop duo of Gustavo Rivas and Rodrigo Montes 6-2. The duo of Pedersen and Akbarov have the team's best doubles record at 10-4. But the Bishops claimed No. 3 doubles as Brody Brice and Logan Stoltz defeated freshman Kaua Santos and sophomore Mathieu Dussaubat 6-2.
But the Aggies turned to their veteran star and their up-and-coming star to claim the point. Graduate Esteban Lopez and freshman Lucas Coupo-Moison defeated Albert Sitwell and Diego Segovia 6-4. Lopez and Coupo-Moison improved to 8-5 on the season.
The Aggies turned the momentum from claiming the doubles point to a 2-0 lead as Santos defeated Alvaro Gomez at No. 5 singles, 6-1, 6-3. Akbarov gave the Aggies a 3-0 lead with a win at No. 3 singles over Montes, 6-0, 6-2. A&T claimed the point when Coupo-Moison defeated Shori Nishizoe 6-1, 6-4. Lopez added an exclamation point with his No. 1 singles win over Bohdan Zhylchuk, 6-4, 6-2. The matches after Lopez's win proved to be entertaining.
At No. 4 singles, Pedersen defeated Martin Cardestig 6-1 in the first set before Cardestig claimed the second set 6-2. Pedersen improved to 12-3 on the season by finishing off Cardestig in the third set, 6-2. At No. 6 singles, Dussaubat improved to 4-1 on the season, but it took him three sets. Dussaubat won the first set 6-3 before Julian Barros rebounded to take the second set 6-3. Dussaubat went on to win the tiebreaking set 10-7.
The Aggies improved to 13-4 on the season and will face Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) foe Hampton in Hampton, Va., on Monday, April 15.
