Men's Tennis Improves to 3-0 During Spring Break

Esteban Lopez earned his 39th career singles victory.

ORLANDO, Fla. – North Carolina A&T men's tennis continued its excellence in singles competitions, in Florida this week and throughout the season with a 6-0 win over the Saint Joseph's Hawks at the USTA National Campus on Wednesday.  

The Aggies improved to 46-1 (.979) in singles play after sweeping all six singles matches on Wednesday. A&T men's tennis, spending their spring break playing tennis at the USTA National Campus, moved to 3-0 in the Sunshine State with previous wins over Saint John's and Howard. More importantly, the Aggies are 8-0 on the season. 

The two teams did not play doubles because of inclement weather, but one of the best singles players in program history did enter the tennis courts. Graduate Esteban Lopez improved to 39-23 for his career and 8-0 on the season with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Justus Agbo. 

Lopez has yet to lose a set this season. The Aggies took a 2-0 lead when No. 4 singles player Said Akbarov defeated Stergios Achilleas Papadopoulos 6-4, 6-1. Junior Ian Pedersen won in straight sets for the eighth consecutive time as he defeated Othman Bezzaz 6-3, 6-3at No. 3 singles. 

Pedersen wanted to work on some things he could have done better in his previous and was pleased with the results. Freshman Kaua Santos clinched the win for the Aggies with a win at No. 5 singles. Santos defeated Jack Campbell 6-4, 6-1. Santos also moved to 8-0 on the season and has yet to lose a set. 

"The first set was tough," Santos admitted. "But I was playing very well, and I dominated the second set."

Ethan Baly and Lucas Coupo-Moison finished off the Hawks. Baly improved to 7-0 on the season, surpassing his career-high as he beat Mark Rubin 6-3, 6-4. Meanwhile, Coupo-Moison and Ernesto Ruy had the only three-set match of the day. 

After losing to Howard's Michael Major the previous day at the USTA National Campus, Coupo-Moison recovered to defeat Ruy 6-2, 6-7, 10-7. Coupo-Moison is now 6-1 on the season. The Aggies have one more match in Florida before returning home to return to class.
