ORLANDO, Fla. – The North Carolina A&T women's tennis team continues to amaze despite having only four players on the roster. The Aggies improved to 3-0 on Monday with a 5-2 win over the College of Saint Benedict at the USTA National Campus.
Women's tennis has joined the A&T men's tennis team on a spring break trip to Florida. Both teams will play several matches as they prepare for a rigorous schedule down the stretch that will hopefully qualify them for the Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) tournament.
Isabela Romanichen and Hana El Sherif started the fun on Monday with a No. 1 doubles win over Ashley Tarrolly and Sophia Jonas. The short-handed Aggies then took the doubles point thanks to the team of Noue Gueblaoui and Tabeth Tadoum. They defeated Peyton Kopel and Greta Nesbit 6-2.
"El Sherif and the Aggies then turned their attention to singles play. El Sherif won at No. 4 singles over Jane Bodensteiner 6-0, 6-2.
"Today's match was pure joy," said El Sherif. Playing outside felt amazing, and winning my third match this season was such a thrill. My singles game was solid, and my doubles match with Isabela was great. I can't wait for more wins ahead."
There were more wins to come for A&T on Monday. Tadoum defeated Nesbit at No. 3 singles, 6-1, 6-1. It gave the Aggies a 3-2 lead because they had to forfeit singles matches five and six. But no worries, Gueblaoui clinched the win for A&T with a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 2 singles.
"We are all super pumped to be able to play in Florida this week," said Tadoum. "It really feels good out there. It was important for me to secure another win for the team, and I look forward to playing again on Wednesday. It's important for us to stay confident and continue on this train for the rest of the season."
The final stop for A&T on Monday was a No. 1 singles win by Romanichen. She defeated Tarrolly 6-1, 7-5. The Aggies are back in action on Wednesday in Florida.
