EAST GREENSBORO – Perfection has its rewards. North Carolina A&T junior bowler Melanie Katen bowled the program's first-ever perfect 300 game on Saturday to propel her to winning Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) bowler of the week honors, as announced by the conference on Tuesday.
The Aggies hosted MEAC Meet #2 over the weekend at Triad Lanes in Greensboro. In traditional format, Katen's 300 came in a 1,153-892 win over Howard on Saturday. Katen knocked down 1,957 pins over two days to win the individual title, averaging 217.44 pins over nine games bowled. She also went over 200 pins in seven games to bring her total to 20 for the season.
Tuesday's weekly honor is the fifth of Katen's career. She has four bowler of the week honors and a rookie of the week accolade. Katen's performance led the Aggies to the MEAC regular-season championship over the weekend as the Aggies finish conference play at 15-1. It marks the second straight season the Aggies have finished with the best regular-season record in the MEAC as they went 7-1 in traditional format at Triad Lanes on Saturday and Sunday.
A&T will be after its third straight MEAC tournament title March 24-26 in Virginia Beach, Va. Katen has a 47.1 strike percentage and a 73.8 spare conversion percentage in Baker format. In traditional format, Katen has a 47.4 strike percentage and a 78.8 spare conversion percentage. She has 7,139 total pins this season for an average of 203.97.
The Aggies return to hosting duties again this weekend at the annual NCATSU Vernell Stallings Invitational at AMF All-Star Lanes on 910 S. Holden Road, Feb. 24-26. The Aggies have won two of the three Stallings Invitationals conducted, losing in the championship match to Vanderbilt last season.
