Tomaszewski Named MEAC Preseason Bowler of the Year

The Aggies are predicted to win their fourth MEAC title in five seasons.

EAST GREENSBORO – Coming off their third Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) championship in four tournaments, the North Carolina A&T bowling team appears poised to win another.

The MEAC released its predicted order of finish and preseason all-conference team on Friday for the 2022-23 season. The Aggies are the preseason favorite, garnering 15 first-place votes as they seek their third straight MEAC championship.

In addition, the Aggies now have the MEAC preseason bowler of the year and the 2021-22 MEAC bowler of the year on the same roster.

Senior Lauren Tomaszewski, fresh off a National Tenpin Coaches Association (NTCA) first-team All-American campaign last season, was voted the 2022-23 MEAC preseason bowler of the year. She is also a member of the league's preseason all-conference team. 1215_MelanieKaten

Junior Melanie Katen, last season's MEAC bowler of the year, also made the preseason team. Tomaszewski earned first-team All-MEAC honors last season in helping the Aggies reach the NCAA tournament for the third time in four seasons. In leading the Aggies to the NCAAs, Tomaszewski earned the most outstanding performer award at the MEAC Bowling Tournament Championships.

Tomaszewski ranked eighth in the nation in strike percentage (54.5). In addition, she had a 74.8 spare percentage. Her 266 in the Prairie View A&M Invitational was tied for the seventh-highest single-game total in the MEAC last season. She was third nationally in the NTCA's Player Composite Performance Index (PCPI). Tomaszewski was also third nationally in traditional scoring (21.3 per frame) and fourth in total scoring average (21.2 per frame).

Katen had a 50.8 strike percentage and a 77.9 spare percentage. She ranked 11th nationally in the NTCA's PCPI. She ranked 14th in total scoring (20.86) and third in frame fill percentage (89.1).

AggieLand has been home to the last two MEAC bowlers of the year. Before Katen won the award, Cameron Strombeck won the honor after the 2020-21 season.

"Both Lauren and Melanie had great success last season," said A&T coach Kim Terrell-Kearney. "They are prepared to keep this going."

A&T received 159 total points, including 15 first-place votes, to claim the top spot in the MEAC's preseason poll, as voted on by head coaches and sports information directors.

"Every year at this time, I am beyond excited about the possibilities," said Terrell-Kearney. "This is a very talented group of players with success at their fingertips."
