CHESAPEAKE, Va. -- It wasn't necessarily the day that head coach
Kim Terrell-Kearney and her North Carolina A&T bowling squad anticipated, going 2-2 on Sunday in the second Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) meet of the season.
The Aggies did, however, finish the season 14-2 in league play, securing the league's best record and the No. 1 overall seed in the upcoming MEAC Bowling Championship Tournament next month.
A&T began their day against No. 24 Monmouth. Thanks to a 245 from
Lauren Tomaszewski, they secured a 992-919 victory.
The Aggies, the sixth-ranked team in the National Tenpin Coaches Association (NTCA), built on that match in their next contest against UAB. Four ladies bowled 200-plus games, led by
Chloe Newberry's 246. Tomaszewski also contributed a 243, and
Melanie Katen knocked down 213 pins.
Ericka Quesada added a 212. Â
The Norfolk State Spartans were next for the Aggies. But Newberry's team-high 211 was not enough to lift the Aggies above the Spartans as they lost their first conference contest of the season, 899-885. Three sub-175 scores ultimately doomed A&T. Â
It didn't get better in their final match of the day. Unfortunately, they lost to 16th-ranked Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES), 968-911. Newberry tied Katen with a team-high 195 in the match.
Don't let that less-than-desirable end to the day fool you, however, as A&T is seeking its third conference title in four years.Â
