EAST GREENSBORO –  Trevor Stewart became the first North Carolina A&T Aggie in school history to medal at the Olympics. On Saturday, Stewart and his mixed 4x400-meter relay teammates finished third at the 2020 Summer Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan.

As a result, Stewart earned a bronze medal for the United States to not only become the first NCAT Aggie to medal at an Olympic Games, but he was also the first athlete from a historically black college or university (HBCU) to medal at the Games this year.

His teammates included Kendall Ellis, Vernon Norwood and Kaylin Whitney. The foursome ran a 3:10.22 to finish behind the gold medal team from Poland and the silver medal team from the Dominican Republic.

Stewart ran the leadoff leg in 44.9 to match some of his other outstanding legs from the 2021 season for the Aggies men's track and field program. Stewart ran the anchor leg on the Aggies indoor 4x400 NCAA indoor national championship team with a 44.67 split.

At the NCAA outdoor championships, Stewart ran the anchor leg in the 4x400 for the Aggies in the finals in 44.17 to lead the Aggies to the NCAA outdoor title.

Stewart is an Olympian because he finished fourth in the men's 400 meters at the U.S. Olympic Trials in 44.90 at Hayward Field on the campus of the University of Oregon in Eugene, Ore. Even though he did not qualify for the open 400, his fourth-place did earn him a position on the mixed 4x400 and a potential spot on the men's 4x400 team.

The collegiate career of Stewart came to an end after the 2021 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Eugene. It was a stellar career that included two event national championships. He qualified for the NCAA outdoor championships three times, finishing second in the nation in the 400m in 2019 and fourth in 2021.

He qualified for the NCAA indoor championships twice but only competed once because the 2020 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships in Albuquerque, N.M., were canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic. He finished seventh in the nation in the 400m indoor event in 2021.

Also to his credit, Stewart claimed four Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) event titles, winning the 4x400 indoor conference title twice, the 4x400 outdoor title once and was the 2019 400m outdoor conference champion.

Stewart finished in first place 28 times in his collegiate career.
