SMYRNA, Tenn. – Two North Carolina A&T bowlers qualified for the United States Bowling Congress Nationals by finishing in the top-six of the regionals.
Senior Ana Olaya and sophomore Lauren Tomaszewski both finished in the top-5. McKendree's Isabel Allen had the best qualifying score with 1,262 total pins, followed by Vanderbilt's Mabel Cummins (1,241), Olaya (1,236), Tusculum's Jordan Mundt (1,222), Tomaszewski (1,212) and Ottawa University's (Kan.) Rebekah Loker (1,209).
All six qualified to bowl singles for nationals. Freshman Melanie Katen and junior Pamela Warr finished tied for eighth place.
"I really feel good about qualifying," said Olaya. "My freshman year, I was out by a few pins. I was nowhere close my sophomore year, and I made it my senior year."
Olaya averaged a 206 over six games. She finished strong in her final game with a 256. She also bowled a 218 in her second game and a 247 in the third game. Tomaszewski averaged 202 for six games. Her last two games were her strongest after posting a 214 in the fifth game and a 233 in the sixth game. She opened the tournament with a 203.
Katen and Warr recorded 1,193 total pins for a six-game average of 198.8. Katen started with a 225, followed by a 230 in the second game. She also had a 228 in the fifth game before finishing with a 173. Warr bowled a 217 to open her day before bowling a 210. Her final game saw Warr post a 203.
Junior Cristina Acosta recorded 1,021 total pins for a six-game average of 170.2. Freshman Laura Garcia totaled 987 pins for a six-game average of 164.5.
The tournament continues Saturday with five four-game Bakers and finishes Sunday with five four-game Bakers.
