GREENSBORO – The North Carolina A&T men's golf team completed the Grandover Collegiate hosted by UNC Greensboro on Sunday at the par-72, 7,270-yard Grandover Resort & Conference Center golf course.
The Aggies finished 15th with a 79-over 943. Davidson College won the tournament with a 16-under 848. Toledo (855, 9-under), UNCG (857, 7-under), Wofford (864, E) and Elon (865, 1-over) followed Davidson in the top-5.
On the individual side, Diego Gonzalez (SR, Caracas, Venezuela) earned top golfer honors for A&T at the tournament by shooting a three-round 10-over 226. UNCG's Nick Lyerly won the tournament as an individual at 14-under 202. Davidson's Alex Heffner (204, 12-under), Mercer's Tobias Jonsson (207, 9-under), Toledo's Barend Botha (209, 7-under) and Toledo's Jamie Tofte Nielson (210, 6-under) completed the top-5.
Gonzalez's third-round card did not have any birdies on it. He fired off a 3-over 75 in the third round to go along with his first-round 77 and second-round 74. He played steady all day, earning 15 pars and three bogeys. His round started on the par-3, 190-yard No. 7.
Through nine holes played, Gonzalez stood at 1-over. He, unfortunately, bogeyed two of his last three holes to finish the tournament.
Anthony Ford (SO, Atlanta, Ga.) had the second-lowest score for the Aggies. Ford's third-round card featured four birdies. He had the best 18-hole round of his collegiate career, finishing with a 2-over 74. Ford's day started with a double-bogey on the par-4, 390-yard No. 9.
Over the first nine holes of his round, he stood at 6-over. He then reached the 570-yard, No. 18 par-5, earning his first birdie of the round. He went on a birdie binge from there. Starting with the 18th, he birdied four of his next five holes to move to 2-over. He parred the final four holes of his round to record his career-low round.
Xavier Williams (232), Martin Gutierrez (246) and JR Smith (255) rounded out the Aggies top-5 golfers.
The Aggies will close play their final tournament of the fall semester in Princess Anne, Md., for the UMES Collegiate Challenge hosted by Maryland Eastern Shore, Oct. 26-27.
