GREENSBORO – Winthrop was able to get seven extra base hits off North Carolina A&T pitching on Wednesday to down the Aggies 15-4 in non-conference baseball action at War Memorial Stadium.
Sophomores Myles Sowell and Milton Rivera and junior Timothy Ravare all went 2-for-4 for N.C. A&T. In the process, Sowell hit his third home run of the season, a line drive shot over the left field wall on a 3-2 pitch in the seventh inning.
Left-hander Danny Garrett got his first start of the season after 10 previous appearances. Winthrop jumped on him early as Tyler Asbill and Mitch Spires opened the game with back-to-back singles. After Garrett struck out Anthony Paulsen, Winthrop catcher Roger Gonzalez homered to straightaway center field to give the Eagles an early 3-0 lead. The Eagles (10-7) added two more runs in the third as Babe Thomas' RBI double to right-center to score Gonzalez. Mark Lowrie followed with an RBI single for a 5-0 advantage.
Riley Arnone, the Eagles starter, pitched three innings, struck out five and did not surrender a run. The Aggies did get on the scoreboard in the fourth inning as Keenan Herring and Ravare opened with singles. One batter later Kyle Clary singled to center field to score Herring. The Eagles, however, scored eight runs over the next two innings to give the Eagles a comfortable 13-1 lead.
Lowrie and Thomas had four RBI apiece. Spires went 3-for-5 with three runs scored, while Jace Whitley went 2-for-4 with two RBI.
The Aggies (4-14) have played 16 of their first 18 games at home. N.C. A&T will play their next 13 games away from WMS, starting this weekend when they open a three-game series at Campbell on Friday at 6 p.m.
