Aggies Top Eagles In Regular Season Finale

GREENSBORO – The North Carolina A&T baseball team finished the season with a bang by defeating rival North Carolina Central, 6-5 in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) game Saturday afternoon at Durham Athletic Park.

With the win, the Aggies (10-36 overall) eliminated the Eagles from postseason play who finished with an overall record of 19-30. NCCU was vying for the final spot in the MEAC tournament with Savannah State who also finished with a 12-12 record in conference play. However the Tigers claimed the spot with a 5-1 head-to-head record over the Eagles.

A&T jumped on NCCU early and posted four runs in the first inning off three hits. Senior pitcher Brian Poag silenced the Eagles' offense for two innings until they were able to drive in an unearned run off an Aggie error to cut the score to 4-1 in the third inning.

In the sixth inning it was A&T's defense again that allowed NCCU to score a pair of runs off a throwing error that sliced the Aggies lead to 4-3.

Senior pitcher Mitchell McQueen took over the duties in the seventh inning but was relieved by sophomore Danny Garrett after the Eagles tied the game at 4 with Christian Triplett's RBI sac fly to right field that drove in Eric Kimber. NCCU took the 5-4 lead after Carlos Ortiz scored off a wild pitch by Garrett.

The Aggies regained the lead in the seventh inning with a sac bunt from freshman Jerry Liang and RBI single by senior Brandon Wilkerson.

Garrett (1-2) recorded his first win of the season and didn't allow any hits or runs in 2.2 innings. Poag finished with a team-high six strikeouts.

Freshman Myles Sowell and Wilkerson led the Aggies with two hits and a run each. Sowell also finished with a game-high two RBI.

Blake Morgan (0-4) recorded the loss for NCCU.

The Aggies finished the season fifth in the MEAC southern division.
