Aggies Lose At Winthrop

ROCK HILL, S.C. – Winthrop used the middle innings of Tuesday night's game to earn a home win over the North Carolina A&T baseball team, 8-4 at Winthrop Ballpark.

Sophomore Timothy Ravare went 2-for-2 with a run scored, while Ryan Jantsch had a 2-for-5 day. The Aggies (2-9) have now pounded out 52 hits in their last five games after posting nine hits on Tuesday. But it was the middle innings where both teams made their push with the Eagles making a bigger one.

The Eagles (11-4) rally came just before the Aggies cut into their lead. Freshman Myles Sowell's double down the left field line led to him scoring on a fielding error by Winthrop shortstop Kyle Edwards to make it a 2-1 game in the fifth inning.

But the Eagles responded as Brad Kaczka's two-run RBI helped Winthrop put together a three-run inning to take a 5-1 lead.  Again, A&T came charging back. Adan Ordonez led off the sixth with a single off right-hand reliever John Menken. Ravare followed with a single to put runners at first and second. Both runners advanced on a Menken wild pitch.

Milton Rivera plated Ordonez on an RBI single to left center. Sowell brought Ravare home on an RBI sacrifice fly to center to make it 5-3. Winthrop was able to pull away again, however, in its half of the sixth. Mark Lowrie drove in two more runs with a single to left center for a 7-3 Winthrop lead.

Babe Thomas led the Eagles by going 2-for-2 and scoring four times. Tyler Asbill and Kaczka also had two hits apiece with Kaczka driving in two runs. Roger Gonzalez had three RBI. A.J. Hunt (0-2) took the loss for A&T after pitching three innings and throwing 44 pitches. Michael Green (1-0) got the win.

The Aggies are back in action again on Saturday with a 1 p.m., doubleheader against conference foe Bethune-Cookman at War Memorial Stadium.
