North Carolina A&T

Marcus T. Johnson Track

North Carolina A&T's track and field facility received a new name on Nov. 19, 2021, when North Carolina A&T State University named the facility the Marcus T. Johnson Track. Johnson Track has become one of the country's premier track and field facilities. The facility opened in 2005 under the name of Irwin Belk Track.

It is home to one of the best men’s and women’s track and field programs in the nation. It has also hosted the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Track and Field Men’s and Women’s Outdoor Championships from 2006-2007 and 2009-2021. In addition, the Aggies are set to host their new conference affiliations championship, the Big South, in 2022.

The Aggies also played host to the National Scholastic Sports Foundation's annual national track and field high school outdoor championship for 14 years. The event, sponsored by New Balance, draws more than 2,000 of the best high school athletes in the nation to A&T.

In 2020, the Aggies hosted the NCAA Division III Men’s and Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

In 2013, the Aggies hosted the NCAA East Regional Preliminary Round. Every Division I school east of the Mississippi River competed. The Mondo Super X Performance track features eight 48-inch lanes and wide turns. There are two jumping pits; a shot put pit and a water pit for the steeplechase event. The hammer and discus throwers compete outside Truist Stadium, and there are plans to construct a new javelin area.

The other high-profile events hosted by A&T include the North Carolina High School Athletic Association 1A, 2A, 3A and 4A Track and Field Championships and the Junior Olympics.

A milestone was reached in 2009 when the Aggies held the U.S. Junior Olympics at North Carolina A&T. The six-day event in July featured more than 7,000 athletes from across the country. The Aggies plan to schedule more events for the state-of-the-art facility.

At the successful 2006 NCAA East Track and Field Regional Championship, A&T became the first historically black college or university to host an NCAA Regional and earned rave reviews for its hospitality and professionalism.

Johnson Track received numerous accolades for its fast track surface and overall facility. Athletes showed how much they loved the facility as 13 regional records and one college record fell at the 2006 NCAA East Regional. The Aggies also hosted the 2009 and '10 NCAA East Regional. North Carolina A&T athletes have even benefited from the facility.

The Aggies have claimed five event national championships – indoor and outdoor – combined. In 2021, the Aggie men and women finished in the top-5 nationally. In 2019, Kayla White earned NCAA Indoor Track Athlete of the Year.
