GREENSBORO – No one with a heart writes this script. Bethune-Cookman defeated North Carolina A&T 31-13 on the Aggies’ homecoming, Saturday afternoon at Aggie Stadium. The Aggies came into a homecoming game with their best record (5-3) in six years. Bethune-Cookman came into the game 2-5 with 16 fumbles lost against an Aggies team with a plus-9 turnover margin. Plus, it was the Aggies Senior Day. A player like senior linebacker Andre Thornton who came from a powerhouse high school program that never lost was “supposed” to have two 0-11 seasons rectified by a Senior Day and Homecoming victory on Saturday. A consistent and reliable receiver like senior Giorgio Lowrance was “supposed” to run off the field with a smile after securing the program’s first winning season in six years in front of sellout crowd at Aggie Stadium. What about iron men Jamison Hedgepeth and Nick Clement? The durable linebacker and free safety have been there for the highs of snapping a 27-game losing streak and beating rival N.C. Central in overtime, and they have been through the lows of the losing streak. Consider the storyline that could have been written about defensive linemen Adam Beal and Tyre Glasper. The two Detroit natives were recruited by N.C. A&T head coach Alonzo Lee during his first stint at N.C. A&T as the defensive coordinator. How sweet it would have been if they could have had their first homecoming win coached by Lee. Who wrote this script anyway? “It’s amazing,’’ said Lee. “But it was some of our seniors who really had the blunders today. When your seniors don’t step up make their plays, it makes it really tough on everything else you’re trying to accomplish.” Sadly, some of the dropped passes and inopportune penalties were made by seniors. A senior committed a 15-yard roughing the passer penalty on a 3rd-and-15 play that eventually led to a Wildcats touchdown. There was also a holding call on a 91-yard kickoff return by Justin Ferrell that was called on a senior. Yet, there was not a lack of effort from the 11 Aggie seniors. Glasper, Beal, Herring, Thornton and Hedgepeth made several stops at the line of scrimmage. The other upside to Saturday’s game was that the Aggies only had to say goodbye to two seniors on offense – Lowrance and quarterback Carlton Fears. The Aggies youth movement almost guarantees future Senior Days will go a lot better. As for the 2009 seniors, there are still two opportunities at upset wins at Florida A&M and S.C. State. “It’s tough on them right now,’’ said Lee about his senior class. “We tried to go and get it for him. I know they wanted it badly like each and everyone of us did. But we can’t let them get too down. We’ve got two more games to play, so we just need to go out and push each other to make it happen.”
